LCD TV DVD Combi – How Will YOU use YOURS?

People used to think that even a tiny old black-and-white portable in the bedroom was a luxury. But that was before the economical LCD TV DVD Combi came along..

Now, especially with the digital switch-over here in the UK, people are buying combi TVs and using them not just in the bedroom, but all over the house and beyond. Here are a few places where an LCD TV DVD combi will be a real godsend:

LCD TV DVD Combi In the Kitchen..

There is a great boom in home cooking, partly thanks to the so-called crunch and partly because there’s a huge wave of interest in cookery (thank you Gordon Effin Ramsay, as we call him!).

Anyway, I was chatting to a girlfriend of mine the other day and she was telling me how she has a DVD or a set of DVDs I think, with loads of recipes on them – you know, with the presenter actually making the dishes. Well, she’s been having a sort of contest with herself to see if she can follow the recipe and keep up with it as the DVD plays! (She’ll never do it..)

It got me thinking though, how nice it is to have a TV in the kitchen – how it keeps you company when you are working alone cooking a meal, cleaning the cooker or whatever. Of course, with a shiny new 22 inch or 19 inch LCD TV DVD Combi you can get all those freeview channels and play your DVDs too – bargain!

..In the Bedroom

Now I know that many a younger reader sharing a bed each night will be thinking – hmm, there are one or two better things to do at night than watching TV, and we’re not talking Puzzler Magazine here..

But, think about the teenage son or daughter. They will be only too glad of a bit of light entertainment in the privacy of their rooms, and what better than a TV DVD Combi. The same might also apply if you have reached the age where, shall we say, there is room for something ELSE in your bedroom life before you go to sleep.

.. and at Uni

Halls of residence can be very lonely places if you are a fresh-faced 18-year-old away from home for the first time. You need all the help you can get when you’re finding your feet. Bring a little comfort into your new life by watching those favourite shows you always watched back home. If you’re really lucky, your parents could send you a regular family news update in the form of a home movie clip on a DVD (you lucky thing!)

Seriously though, an LCD TV DVD Combi is a real asset to a student. For a start, it’s a great way of accumulating a few mates, because they’ll all want to come round to your room to watch it. It’s also not too massive for your little dorm room – just the one box and it does the lot.

A real bonus is that with the right cables you can use the TV as a computer monitor, great if you have a PC because you won’t need to bring a separate screen to uni. You can watch all the free internet TV channels too!

These combo televisions are extremely good value at the moment and you can get some of the best deals at Amazon UK – the link’s right here: LCD TV DVD Combi.

Samsung LCD TV DVD Combi: LE22B470 22-inch HD Ready Widescreen with Freeview

Looking for a slightly larger screen LCD TV DVD combi for the kitchen or bedroom? Take a look at this VERY popular new model – the brilliant 22inch from Samsung.

Brand spanking new, it’s Samsung’s first TV DVD combi and it looks all round as if they have dedicated a lot of time and effort into getting it right first time. The older competitors must be quaking in their boots!

Samsung LE22B470 LCD TV DVD Combi

Samsung LE22B470 LCD TV DVD Combi

It’s a unit with a solid, quality feel to it, like it’s going to last for years. It has really cool and trendy looks too – I absolutely adore that “merlot” go-faster stripe along the base of the screen.

The picture quality – well it’s amazing. Really good. That applies whether you’re watching a film on the built-in DVD player or catching up with your soaps on Freeview. I don’t think I mentioned that it has Freeview – I suppose we almost take that for granted these days in any new TV model.

Ease of set-up is always important for any television, whether a basic 15″ LCD TV or a sophisticated 22in LCD TV DVD combi like this one. You will be reassured to hear that setting up this Samsung is nice and easy, however much of a technophobe you think you are.

Of course, the built-in DVD player is what makes an LCD TV DVD combi such great value compared to a standard LCD TV. No need to buy a separate DVD player now, with all its dusty cables. But it only stacks up if you’re getting a player of decent quality. Once again, no worries on that score. The slick, quality, built-in DVD player is absolutely the icing on the cake in this model.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the quality compare to other portable LCD TV DVD Combi models?
It’s great. It’s not just me saying it either. It’s won awards including the top three small screen TV from Channel Four, an award from Sound and Vision Magazine and a recommendation from What Hi-Fi magazine.
I like the fact that it has an 800×480 display, which is great for an 11 inch screen. As for the unit itself, it’s constructed to a higher standard than several models that cost more money, in my opinion – bear this in mind when you compare prices.

Can it plug into 240v sockets as well?
Yes it can. You get a 12v DC adapter that plugs straight into any standard in-car power socket, and also get a 240v AC adapter for home use.

Does it have Freeview?
Freeview is included too! In fact, you really are getting the best of both worlds because this portable TV DVD combi has both a digital and an analogue tuner, so if you happen to travel through an area that hasn’t yet switched over to digital television, you can still get the main TV channels. Oh, and there’s also a TV aerial socket so you can get an even better signal when using it in the house.

How easy is it to use?
It’s a very intuitive model to use, no complaints there. Just switch it on and you will be up and running in no time.

Is the built-in DVD player up to scratch?
In a word, yes. You will be hard-pressed to get a better DVD player in a portable TV DVD combi. By the way, What Hi-Fi magazine liked it too, saying “The built-in DVD player is relatively slick and quiet”.

How heavy is it?
The unit weighs a very portable 1.62kg, and it’s also a very convenient size to carry – under 30cm wide, 21cm high and a little over 6cm deep. You can easily hang it over the back of a car seat for the kids to watch – just remember to buy a harness when you buy the TV, because that’s not included in the package.

LCD TV DVD Combi – Buyer’s Checklist

OK so you have decided that an LCD TV DVD combi is just what you need for the kitchen, bedroom or wherever. But how do you know which features you need? Please read on..

Here’s a shortlist of some of the things to look out for when buying combi TVs – some of them could be very important to you:

  • Digital Tuner – this is the bit that you need so that the LCD TV DVD combi will work after the big switch-over. It’s essential, and 99% of TVs have one. But not all. Unbelievably, it’s still possible to be sold an old-style analogue TV. Look out for Freeview in the description too, because this means if you are in a Freeview area (and most people are nowadays) then you will get all those extra channels for free – and without the need for an extra Freeview digibox.
  • DVD Player – don’t be tempted to save a little bit of cash and do without a built-in DVD player if the television is for a bedroom or kitchen. It costs very little extra and will give you loads more pleasure from the machine. Look out for a DVD player that can cope with different formats of DVD, namely DVD-R and DVD+R. Many models also allow you to view DVD discs of still photos, so you can see your holiday snaps on the TV.
  • Wide-screen – not many people know that there are LCD TV monitors out there that were first of all designed to be used with computers, and only later “converted” for selling as TVs. These monitors have a picture with more height versus width, and if the picture cannot be adjusted properly, everyone on the screen will look thin and tall. Of course, that may not always be a bad thing.. Seriously, you need to look for a screen ration of 16:9.
  • Electronic Programme Guide (EPG) – this is the on-screen guide to all of the programmes on all channels for the week ahead. It can be tricky on some LCD TV DVD combi models to actually scroll through, see what’s on etc. This can come to be a real nuisance and I strongly advise you to look for a model that is said to have a user-friendly EPG.
  • Response time – the amount of time that it takes each new picture to be loaded onto the screen. These days, 20 milliseconds is good, and eight milliseconds is really good. It means that when you watch things like action films, the moving people, cars etc. won’t be blurred at all, which can happen with inferior makes of LCD TV DVD combi.

I’ve found several LCD TV DVD combi models that satisfy all of the above points and have great reviews.
At the moment I’m recommending one of the Toshiba range as my favourite because it’s currently available at a staggeringly good price for some reason.

LCD TV DVD Combi – Are YOU Ready?

We’ve got the most popular LCD TV DVD combi televisions right here for you, ready to buy online (at a really good price just now too).

If you’re in a hurry to buy, you can find the full range of LCD TV DVD combi machines by clicking the red button on the right >>

But if you are still with me, you need to read this if you are in the UK and you still have an old portable TV, perhaps in the kitchen or bedroom.

Why? Well, you will have heard about the big digital switch-over, I’m sure, and you may already be planning to change that old portable at some point. But what you may not realise is that now is a great time to bite the bullet and get your credit card out, because TV DVD Combi prices are very competitive at the moment for some reason, and there are some excellent deals around – as you can see if you click the red button.

An LCD TV DVD combi..

  • is ideal for a bedroom or kitchen
  • saves you space and money
  • has no dusty trailing cables from digiboxes or DVD players
  • lets you play DVDs and get freeview at no extra cost
  • is great value at the moment

On the other hand, you could always leave it a while longer.. The thing is, if you somehow forget about the problem, your old analogue TV just won’t work after the switch-over – well not without a digibox anyway. And you may not have room in the kitchen or bedroom for one of those, not to mention the extra cables. To make matters worse, older TVs won’t even connect to a digibox at all, so will be useless.

So, you may be thinking – why not just get a straight LCD TV without a built-in DVD player? Well, you could, and if you click the big red button you will find plenty of great LCD TVs. But please don’t underestimate just how nice it is to be able to pop in a DVD and play all your favourite films; sitcoms; soaps or whatever in the bedroom or kitchen

And the best bit about buying combi TVs is that the DVD player, being built-in vertically behind the screen, takes up no extra space and requires no dusty cables – and costs little more than a TV without one. Another great bonus these days is freeview – a TV/DVD Combi with freeview has got to be my ideal TV for the bedroom!

So, if you just need an easy-to-use TV and DVD player for the bedroom, kitchen, or even for student digs – anywhere where space is at a premium – then the LCD TV DVD Combi could well be the ideal solution.
